Old Folk Singer

This bit of text tickled me in the New Yorker, it was an article about old folk singers, but not famous ones like Woody Guthrie, ones that have never been taped and know songs that exist only from being handed from generation to generation. This chap in the article spent years travelling southern states of USA recording these people. Interesting serious article till this bit:

‘ He’d tape one old singer through a screen door – she wouldn’t let him into her house – and another shortly before she was sent to prison, at the age of eighty two, for dealing marijuana. “That jury’ll never convict me,” she reportedly said. “I’ve sold moonshine to half of ‘em and fucked the rest.”

ah Grandma.
